Naturally, our molars (and in some instances incisors) have grooves and valleys on the chewing surfaces, which make them more vulnerable in developing cavities. Sealant is a clear protective layer made of the same material as white filling that serves a a barrier to decrease the chance of cavity from forming on the chewing surface of the tooth.

This is particularly useful on our pediatric patients, where the immature enamel, unrefined manual dexterity leading to inadequate brushing, and frequent snacking habit can lead to increased risk of cavity. Dental sealants can be placed on all molars, whether they are baby teeth or adult teeth. At the minimum, we recommend sealants on adult molars since they are located furthest back in the mouth and we want to protect their life-long smile.
